WestCoastFill

Now that you have been acquainted with the mellow, lyrically raw MC’s of the East.
It’s time for some westcoastbounce.

Easily identifiable by its production, West Coast rap boasts funk inspired basslines, hard hittin' rhymin’ and plenty of chronic.

Can you dig it?

No explanation necessary.

Westside Connection. Comprised of Ice Cube, WC and Mack10.
Some tunes your grandma would hate.

Yall knowww what it isss

Man of the fucking decade. The doc has grown with the genre, never leavin' the top for long. Some Classic Dre.

Rest in Peace you funky motherfucker

Tuesday - Last Days

First year's coming to a close, and here's my packing playlist for all y'all to enjoy.
Nicolas Jaar is one of the most consistent producers in the game, and boy does this man know the importance of well placed basslines and tasteful vocal samples.

Binary Star are legends in the underground rap scene, and rightfully so; their solemn beats and well-wrought wordplay are most definitely music to my ears.

Four Tet is possibly the only producer who could legitimately add something to MF DOOM and Madlib's masterpiece - Madvillainy. Be sure to cop the full remix ep.

Mike G of OFWGTKA fame has released his second chopped and screwed mixtape; here are some highlights:

Javelin makes some of the best sample based pop music imaginable:

Some filth to blast with your windows down:

Brace yourself:

As always, be easy.

Summer's Comin' - Kid Koala, Bibio & More

I know it's been a while folks, but I can assure you this post is worth the wait.
First on the docket we have Kid Koala, a Vancouver born turntablist whose knack for manipulating brass solos into the melancholy melodic basis for his tracks is a talent unmatched by any dj. Be sure to grab his album "Some of My Best Friends Are DJ's," and support some homegrown music.

Bibio is a bit of an anomaly; his electronic compositions that so often border on pop are also equally inclusive of other genres. Fire Ant's reliance on a chopped up J Dilla sample shows the artist's keen ear for hip-hop, while Ambivalence Avenue's guitar driven hook starts off with an indie sound that slowly degenerates into a world music psychedelia, incorporating tribal flute into the song's structure. Buy this wunderkind's fourth (and best, in my opinion) album here.

While MF DOOM has gained most of his respect for his undeniable swag behind the mic, it's important to remember what a talented producer this man is. He released an album behind the decks as King Geedorah, as well as numerous remixes for other hip-hop legends.

Bonus, DOOM jumps on a De La song and kills it:

Lastly we've got a bit of bounce for yo' trunk:

Be easy,

It’s Monday Mon

Massive Monday
Its monday. Check some new beats

Two rhythmic yet unpredictable electronic tracks from another 1/4 of the Glitch Mob. Intricate sampling and quick hitting electronic riffs make for a complete sound.

Here are a few from Max Justus. A relatively new artist from humble Madison, Wisconsin. With five albums under his belt in just three years, he has accumulated a unique and distinguishable vibe. Recently, with increasing recognition from the release of his complete remix of Kanye West’s 808’s and Heartbreak album, Max is on the up and up. Check him out!

Pretty Lights needs no introduction. Derek Vincent Smith is the reigning king of digital sampling, hitting listeners fiercely with buzzing bass lines and mesmerizing electronic synths.
Here’s two off his 2006 release. “Taking Up Your Precious Time"

+! a recently released remix from his ongoing tour

Two more tracks from edIT. Off his ep “Crying over Prose for No Reason”
The same glitchy sound, this time with mellow undertones. An interesting hybrid worth checking out.

To even out the balance, here’s some bangers from Downlink off his recent, Ignition EP.

HERE! are Nit Grit. Stumbled upon by my brethren P B no J this group is ILL! A fresh addition to the dub-step scene, incorporating entrancing melodies with the fear inducing wobble we all love and cherish. There self entitled album NitGriT doesn't disappoint, and can be grabbed here

Two finish, a trio of mellowed out chillers. Loaf it up.

Oh, and Das Racist......

so fresh.

Glitchin

Glitchy n Shit

Edward Ma, better known as edIT, is a component of the fresh and hard hitting new trio on the electronic scene. The Glitch Mob. Their signature, glitchy yet melodic, drum driven sound is evident in his early work. Straight Heat and The Sirens are my favourites, but they’re all illin. Check him out

Grab the whole album here

A straight chilled track from Nosaj Thing

A piano driven, classic Lupe track off his new album, Lasers.

Gotta respect the fresh blood in hip hop. Breathing some delinquent, drug using life into a dying genre. OFWGKTA!

Drinkin' Smokin' Straight West Coastin'

Meet Carnage. A fine example of the young talent in Vancouver's growing dubstep scene. A grade 12 student at Point Grey, Robin Daily is the man behind it all. This guy has only been producing dubstep for 2 months but is already making waves. He has a background as both a metal guitarist and a hip hop producer. These genres are apparent in his hard hitting melodic reworkings of classic hip hop as well as the original filth he produces. Carnage is only just getting started. He recently submitted a track to Excisions Subsonic remix contest and trust us, its disgusting. Expect greatness from this kid as he is planning on furthering his music career next year at the prestigious Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Check emmm:

Tuesdub

Gil-Scott Heron - a spoken word legend and soul singer that many consider to be a founding father of hip-hop as we know it is now receiving the recognition he deserves, courtesy of some magical re-workings of his recent album "I'm New Here."

Up next we've got one of my favourite Dubstep sub-genres; the purple movement.

The father of it all:

Some fresh takes on the scene:

Purple Dubstep takes heavy influence from the searing synths and luxurious low end of the G Funk Movement:

Which in turn was founded on the P-Funk movement, instigated by George Clinton:

Thirsty Thursday

Today is Thursday - the unofficial start to the weekend. Tonight I'll be hitting up the Ajapai show at le Belmont. Unbelievably stoked for this, as apparently he outplayed Downlink (quite the feat) at his recent gig in Victoria.
Check his shit out:
Next we've got some classic pre-drinking bangers, the perfect prelude to a debaucherous night:
And finally, a couple of cool-out jams to wrap up your evening, best enjoyed with a bong hoot or six:

BASS NECTAR

Bassnectar (Lorin Ashton)’s sound has been pulsating on the electronic scene since 2001.
He loves bass and hates girls who shower.
Here’s a few tracks we like.

A duo of classic rap infused Bassnectar tracks
